SH 73: CLOSED Due to 50+ Car Pileup

SH 73 near Veolia Plant (W of Taylor's Bayou)

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says HWY 73 just west of Port Arthur, about 80 miles east of Houston (near the Veolia plant) is shut down due to a major accident. Officials say more than 50 vehicles MAY be involved in the accident.

Chief Sonnier says 2 cars were on fire when he arrived at the accident site.  One tanker truck was turned over. on its side  He says 4 people had to be removed from their car using a jaws of life.  As of 7 a.m., 10 patients had to be taken to the hospital due to injuries from the accident.  One man had heart attack on the scene and had to be taken to the hospital.

Official say the collisions were caused “by poor visibility due to mixture of fog and smoke from marsh wildfires.”

All eastbound and westbound lanes  of 73 are closed just west of Taylor’s Bayou due to the wreck.  You are advised to use FM 365 and Interstate 10.
