I-45 Gulf Frwy: HOT Lanes
February 17, 2012

METRO OPENS FIRST HOT LANES ON 45 SOUTH
Gulf Freeway drivers have a new commuting option to combat gridlock – METRO’s HOT Lane

The congestion-fighting concept is simple – drivers without passengers will now be able to use the HOV system by paying a toll, on the I-45 South HOT Lanes, prices range from $1 to $4.50, based on the time of day and level of congestion.

The Gulf Freeway is the first corridor in METRO’s 84-mile HOV network to undergo the transformation, with US 59 South, IH-45 North, US 290 and US 59 North to follow. A gradual opening of the HOT Lanes started on Monday, Feb. 13. The grand opening occurs Monday, Feb. 20.

Cash is not accepted in the HOT Lanes but drivers will be able to use any of the following authorized toll tags: Metro HOT Lanes Toll Tag, Harris County EZ Tag, TxDOT’s TxTAG or the Dallas NTTA Toll Tag.

In addition to posting updates regarding METRO’s HOV-HOT Lane conversion on the agency’s website, METRO also launched an educational campaign – I Hate Houston Traffic, which included billboards, radio spots, and print and digital ads.  The agency invited the congestion-loathing community to its Facebook and Twitter sites to open up the conversation about the project, educate and answer questions.

Major Bridge Repair: Downtown
February 9, 2012

Not your everyday bridge deck repair

“TxDOT contractor to lift and rotate bridge deck”

A segment of the IH 10 Katy Freeway westbound connector ramp to IH 45 North, one of the oldest bridge structures in the Houston District, will undergo a unique repair that will correct shifting of the roadway.

TxDOT engineers have developed an innovative plan to repair the connector which has moved slightly out of place to prevent it from becoming a hazard to the traveling public. Specialized crews will lift a portion of the connector with large cranes and rotate it back into place. Once the span is back in place, additional repairs will be made to strengthen the structure.

“Over the 40 years of the life of this bridge we’ve experienced numerous contraction and expansion cycles due to the heat of the summer and (the cold) of the winter,” said Q Allen, TxDOT. “The expansion and contraction have allowed, over time, the span of the bridge to rotate.”

Crews will need to close the ramp for approximately ten consecutive days

***CLOSED: Friday, February 10 at 9 p.m. until Monday, February 20 at 5 a.m.

Detour: To the Heights Blvd. exit.

The Travis Street connector ramp to IH 45 North Freeway will also be closed during the smae period. This will impact motorists trying to enter IH 45 North Freeway northbound from downtown. Also, one right lane of Travis northbound between Commerce and Girard in downtown will be closed.

Also, all other downtown traffic destined to IH 45 North Freeway northbound can also use Walker to access IH 45 North Freeway northbound. Motorists are encouraged to use Capitol, Prairie, and Congress St. to reach Walker to access IH 45 North Freeway northbound.
HOV lanes will not be affected.

Expansion of Staffordshire/Stafford Rd
January 19, 2012

Ribbon Cutting: Thursday, Jan. 19th at 2:30pm

Crews expanded the two-lane asphalt open ditch roadway to a four-lane divided roadway with a raised median in the center. The addition of a lane in each direction will significantly improve the mobility of traffic traveling through the Stafford area. The US 90A project in the area was completed a few years ago and Staffordshire/ Stafford Road expansion will offer a smoother tie-in to US 90A.It took crews about 18 months to complete the project that stretches about three miles from Beltway 8 to Fifth Street.

 Q: Jennifer,

I have not heard you mention the I-45 major traffic switch at Dixie Farm Rd. some time in the next couple of days.  The northbound sign says it will start tonight at 9:00 pm but the southbound sign I think says 10/01.

Frank S.

Dickinson

A: Here’s a quote from TxDOT:

Tonight the contractor is removing a large overhead sign structure on the IH 45 north bound main lanes just before the FM 1959/Dixie Farm Rd. exit Thursday night starting at 9:00 PM.  For the contractor to remove the sign structure they will preform a rolling lane closure of the freeway north bound.  This means that the freeway might be stopped for a few minutes while the structure is lifted from it’s foundation and placed in between the main lanes and frontage road.

This weekend the contractor originally scheduled for a traffic switch on the IH 45 north bound main lanes but due to issues with the amount of work they are rescheduling for next weekend starting October 7, 2011 9:00 PM..

They however are still going to switch traffic on IH 45 south bound main lanes starting Saturday 9:00 PM October 1, 2011 until Sunday 8:00 AM October 2, 2011.  The traffic on the south bound main lanes will be detoured onto the temporary south bound main lane detour.

The freeway closure will extend until Monday 5:00 AM October 3, 2011 just in case we run into any issues. – TxDOT

Intersection Under Construction

Q: Construction at the Beltway 8/Hardy Road intersection appears to be at a standstill leaving the area in unsafe and unsightly state. It has been this way for months. The situation is creating a traffic problem resulting in accidents and delays. Is there some explanation for why the project has been abandoned? Are they just going to leave it in a mess indefinitely? There is no doubt something being mishandled. It appears our hard earned tax money is being wasted.

Gary J.

A:

Hi Gary,

Great question. It is my understanding that the project was going as planned. All of a sudden, the company contracted to do the job-defaulted! They simply went out of business. TxDOT, then had to restart the bidding process over. It’s like starting from day one, but with lanes blocked and commuters wondering why no progress is being made.

TxDOT says: “We are aware of the traffic issue and are working as fast as possible to move the construction forward. It may still be a few months before you see any activity at that location.”

Sorry about your traffic troubles, but stick to an alternate route. 🙂
