Starlight Gala
May 19, 2009

Jennifer Reyna, Mistress of Ceremonies for The 2009 Starlight Gala

Here’s the news clip that ran Friday night as I emceed the 14th Annual Starlight Gala. The black-tie event took place at the beautiful Rice Hotel overlooking downtown.

I had a pleasant evening…meeting wonderful people who’s lives will forever be altered due to their illnesses. I met a father who had survived two different types of cancer. I couldn’t imagine what it had been like to hear the diagnoses and go through treatments – twice! He looked great though. I met a best friend who knew what it was like to have her friend go through treatment at a hospital. She shared a beautiful slide show and story with us. There were family members and supporters in attendance as well.

The goal of Starlight Gala Houston is to cultivate the next generation of Houston community leaders while raising money for the American Cancer Society. This year, Starlight Gala broke records bringing in more than $125,000 for a grand total of over $1.4 million since its inception! But, more research is needed. It was a great honor for me to host such an important event. I hope that one day, we conquer cancer.

Pictures – Strides Against Breast Cancer

Jennifer Walker is the community manager of The American Cancer Society for the Gulf Coast Region who invited me to emcee their Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. It was held on Saturday, October 20th at Sam Houston Park, downtown. I rolled out of bed at 7am and arrived around 8am. They had about 3,000 people show up to walk the 5K, donating money for the great cause. I was impressed by the attitude of the survivors and of a surprise guest who made an appearance….a 90 year old breast cancer survivor!

I also had the pleasure of meeting Susan O’Donnell, of KSBJ Radio, who is a riot. She’s a stand-up comedian which made hosting the event that much more fun! You can read more about her by heading to this link – http://www.sodonnell.com/HTML/ministry.htm
