100 Club: Helping Firefighters
April 21, 2009

The 100 Club was established in Houston, Texas in 1953. The organization began when 100 men, each contributing $100, wanted to help the families of Houston Police Officers who were killed in the line of duty. In October 2001, The 100 Club reached another milestone in its history by providing benefits to the dependents of Firefighters killed in the line of duty.

On Easter weekend, two Houston firefighters did not make it out of a burning home. The stories of Captain James Harlow and Firefighter Damien Hobbs can be found on a facebook page set up in their honor. Your donations of $99,500, collected on April 17th, went to help their families. KPRC was proud to team up with the 100 Club once again to make a difference. Our condolences go out to the Harlow and Hobbs’ families.

The continued growth of The 100 Club is only possible through its members and donations made from the community. Your membership helps The 100 Club continue to support the Law Enforcement Officers and Firefighters that protect you.

I hosted the morning portion of our 100 Club Fundraiser on Local 2, Tuesday morning. I knew that the 100 Club was an organization that raised funds for families of police officers killed in the line of duty. BUT – here’s what I didn’t know:

* they now help the family of fightfighters

* they have 27, 609 present members!

* they have become proactive as well; providing gear such as protective vests and communication equipment

The goal was to raise $100,000 and we surpassed that bringing in a GRAND TOTAL of $111,800. They are always looking for your support. If you want to donate head to their website
