CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTS AWARDED TO TWO HOUSTON PROJECTS
“Two of the 100 Most Congested Roadway Segments in Texas”

The Texas Transportation Commission awarded contracts for two major projects in the Houston District yesterday. The winning bid for the IH 610/US 290 Interchange was priced at $151.5 million and the IH 45 South project from Kurland to FM 2351 for $77.5 million. Both projects include construction along segments on the 100 Most Congested Roadways in Texas list, and are funded with Proposition 12* dollars.

Construction on the IH 610/US 290 interchange includes constructing an inbound direct connector from US 290 and the IH 610 North to IH 10 Katy Freeway designed to eliminate traffic weaving in the area.  Workers will also reconstruct the IH 610 North Loop from Ella to US 290/IH 610 interchange.  This phase is one part of the major reconstruction planned for US 290.
WORK BEGINS: This summer.

Construction on the IH 45 South project will include widening six existing mainlanes to ten and adding an additional frontage lane totaling three in each direction.  The project will also replace two overpasses, FM 1959 also known as Dixie Farm Rd. and FM 2351, which will be built at-grade.  An exact start date has yet to be determined but the contractor can start as early as July.

* Approved by voters in November 2007, Proposition 12 authorizes the issuance of $5 billion in general obligation funds for transportation projects.  In mid-2009, the Texas State Legislature authorized TxdOT to go to contract on approximately $2 billion of those voter-approved funds for non-tolled highway projects.

Q:  Hi Jennifer,

I had a question about why txdot is closing one lane going northbound on 59 near the Grand Parkway. I also noticed they were also closing some alternate lanes last night causing some minor backups.

Thanks,
Johnny

A: They are working to improve freeway drainage. They are installing trench drains to intercept more water than what has been out there. This is to better prevent hydroplaning. The same thing will be done on US 59 NB from Sweetwater to SH 6. I hope this helps!
