Cracks in your windshield (viewer mail)
March 4, 2008

“Jen,We enjoy your traffic report each morning and wonder how you look fresh as a daisy so early!

Both of our cars have windshield cracks caused by rocky debris from I-10 construction. First, can we get anyone from the construction project to repair our windshields. And secondly, when should we consider replacing our windshields, ie.. the construction to be completed.”

Good Morning Del and Mimi,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write in and share your support with me.

Well, by the time you see me on-air, I’ve already been up for an hour and a half…so I guess that helps. 🙂

Let’s get to your concern and windshield damage though. I’m so sorry you are having to deal with this problem, but it sounds like you and your wife are ok, as far as safety goes.

Here is what we found out:
From TxDot… it depends on the situation.

1. Debris and damage is considered a general hazard of driving. Hence, the reason why insurance companies encourage you to purchase comprehensive coverage.

2. However, if the debris specifically came from a State truck or from State construction, the driver can file a claim with the state. The claim will then be investigated.

3. Or, if the debris came from a private truck or private vehicle, the driver can copy down the information from the company (i.e. DOT #, or License #) and file a claim with that company or individual.

Some would advise that you not change out the windshield, until you no longer have to travel the Katy Frwy. I’m not sure if that is realistic for you, but I wanted to mention it anyway. As for completion of the construction…well, according to the site, the end appears to be near 3/2009.

I hope this information has helped. I wish you the best!
